How to Prepare Odisha Special Kartika Masa Somabar Dalma

 In Odisha, the month of Kartika is considered a holy month. So people of Odisha wake up in the early morning take bath and visit the temple as they think it is the way they can please god. Each Monday in this month people keep fasting the whole day and eat once before sunset and the specialty of the day is they use to cook a special Dalma that is Somabar Dalma/ Habisa Dalma using very few ingredients. 

Now I will describe how to cook this Dalma and what ingredients you need to do that.

Here are the ingredients that use to cook this special Dalma. 

  1. Roasted Moong Dal(300 gm)
  2. Raw Banana(3 Nos.)
  3. Grated Coconut(1/2 piece)
  4. Arvi/ Saru(200 gm)
  5. Oou/ Elephant apple(1/2)
  6. Roasted Jeera and red chili powder(5 tbspn)
  7. Cow Ghee(4-5 tbspn)
  8. Salt
These are the ingredients specially used for this recipe but you can add 
  1. Raw papaya
  2. Beans
  3. Yam
But Potato and tomato are not used in this item as people think these vegetables cultivated in a foreign country. 
Preparation time- 1 hour.
 
Procedure:-

Take 2 ltr. of water in a bowl and start boiling it, once its starts boiling add roasted moong dal into it. Once the dal starts boiled add the raw Banana(Cut into small pieces) into it and after 2 to 3 minutes add aarvi (Cut into large pieces). Add salt as per taste into it. Once the dal and vegetables are cooked around 90% add the oou/ elephant apple & grated coconut into it. If the oou added before vegetables are cooked then it will not allow the vegetables properly as its sour in nature. Check after 5 -7 minutes if the vegetables and dal is cooked properly stop the flame. Traditionally Turmeric is not added into it, but if you want you can add the same. 
Now take ghee in a tadka pan and heat it up, once the oil is heated up add jeera and dry red chilly into it. wait until the jeera starts cracking properly, then add the tadka into the dalma. Now add the roasted Jeera & red chilly powder into it.
